Recess

In today's schools, recess is one thing that tends to get shorter and shorter. However, in one state, one school is trying some new...more recess!!! As a proponent for movement in the classroom, I am a huge fan of more recess. It allows the students to get all their wiggles and jiggles out before coming back inside the classroom in order to help focus. Here is the article and story that was featured on the Today Show:

I am curious what happens in a school in Boston, (where I work) had indoor recess, would that mean four indoor recess's!? I am already starting to think of creative ways to that indoor recess and tie it into some academics :)

Here are some great resources that I have used in my classroom for different movement breaks:

https://www.gonoodle.com/

- This website has awesome movement break ideas that my students love! There are dancing videos, yoga videos if you want calm movement breaks and even some counting songs!

http://standupkids.org/movement-break/

- This website provides specific movement breaks that are more like PE activities

I also use a lot of youtube as a way to find movement break videos. This way I can do something different with my students each time and keep it engaging for them :)

Welcome!

Welcome!

I just wanted to give a quick hello to anyone who is viewing this blog. I am new to blogging, so work with me as I figure this whole thing out! I am currently a kindergarten teacher for the Boston Public School system. I work at a dual language school where the students learn both Spanish and English...however I am only monolingual! I try to incorporate as much movement as I can into my classroom because I believe it helps kids learn and keeps them active. My school has such short recess, that any movement throughout the day helps. I will be posting about the types of movement I do with my students along with articles that I find related to movement in the classroom. Hope you enjoy!

Happy moving :)
